"Transformations"
This catalog presents twenty-seven figures and discusses the
pre- conquest culture of Mezcala/Chontal and its origins. Written by
Spencer Throckmorton in 1991, it is a comprehensive study of the stone
votive figures of the Mezcala tradition. Controversial as the
background is, enigmatic as these stone figures are, they speak to
us. The economy, the simplicity, and the remarkable lithic
technology all touch our early 21st Century tastes and sensibilities.
With photographs by John Taylor Bigelow.
