Throckmorton Fine Art is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition for Asia Week 2004 in New York. Furthering our quest for more understanding of this exciting period of historical development in early China, the gallery will present a wide array of decorated pottery and jade carvings originating from the numerous clan tribesman that comprise the community of cultures that existed during the Neolithic Age.

The population grew rapidly during this period in history. Clan tribes in various regions created distinctive and artistic societies adding color, texture, and richness to the tapestry of Chinese culture. Technology developed, the plowing technique was invented and farm crops increased considerably in variety and production Division of labor in various handicrafts grew meticulous. Shamanism prospered and sizeable sacrificial altars appeared. Great leaders with military and religious power emerged and fortified cities grew and flourished all over China. During this age the many clan tribes in the various parts of China embarked on the road towards civilization.

Included in this exceptional collection of material are the visual records of this emerging culture: jade hair cylinders of the Hongshan culture, jade T'sung of the Liangzhu, beautiful black pottery of the Dawenkou and Longshan cultures, decorated pottery of the Majiazao and Machang cultures, and the exquisite and often ethereal jade bi discs of the Liangzhu culture.
