THINGS STAND STILL
Throckmorton Fine Art is very pleased to announce our upcoming photography exhibition, Things Stand Still: Photographs by Dirk McDonnell. This will be the first solo exhibition with Throckmorton Fine Art for the self-taught artist. Spencer Throckmorton first saw McDonnell's early sculptural works in the 1980's. Intrigued, Mr. Throckmorton bought a piece, which lead to subsequent meetings over the next several years. Their continued correspondence brought to light McDonnell's ability and talent as a fine art photographer, which has culminated in this exquisite exhibition.
The images included are elegant, romantic, and strikingly beautiful. Many were captured by a large format, 4 x 5 field camera, allowing the artist to place both foreground and background simultaneously in and out of focus. A mysterious effect is achieved leaving things slightly off-tilt and forcing the observer to question the truth in what they are seeing, e.g. - is this a real landscape, or a carefully constructed miniature of one? Things Stand Still challenges perceptions while coupled with a sense of enlightenment in attempting to discover an understanding of the world.
The artist's career began in the late 1960's when he began fabricating sculpture out of steel. In 1970, he began designing silver jewelry, which sold in stores nationwide. His work appeared in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in the Fall of 1972. In the mid-1970's he began to travel extensively which led to many exciting and interesting adventures that have helped cultivate and enrich the life experience of the artist. In 1990, he began to work exclusively in Black & White. He began exhibiting his photography in the mid 90's in group as well as solo shows and his work is included in the following museum collections: The Georgia O'Keefe Museum; The Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME; The Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, ME; The Bravo Center, Oaxaca, Mexico; The Norma Marin Collection at Smith/Wellesley/Mt. Holyoke, & The Bruce Brown Collection at PMA.
