Throckmorton Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibit of twenty-five, limited edition, platinum/palladium photographs by the acclaimed Brazilian photographer, Christian Cravo. As a third generation artist and a native of Bahia, a costal Brazilian city known for its rich heritage of African culture, the connection to the continent of Africa is innately a part of the artist’s evolution. Cravo’s earlier projects date back to 2000 with Irredentos, which portrayed the life and faith of the Brazilian backlands, his next series in 2005, Autrement, was a gorgeous collection of images of black culture in the state of Bahia, and finally his decade-long, life’s project, In the Gardens of Eden, portraying the people of Haiti, their struggles and their search for redemption through mysticism. In culmination Cravo was drawn to the primal foundations of life and this realization has taken him onto his next journey, Africa.

“Shadow and Light” consists of photographs that appear highly stylized, evoking “modernism,” capturing the basics of life, recurring patterns, and helping us to see the common lattices through detail shots and pairing photographs to reveal the subtleties in nature’s beauty.

Cravo’s compositions are highlighted by a masterful use of light and shadow. His images are further enhanced by the use of platinum prints. Platinum, while expensive, is warm and permanent. The directness of Cravo’s work, and the power of platinum give this latest body of work a contemporary feel. Africa known as the cradle of life, is viewed in a new and fresh way.
